Second-hand gold chains
Second-hand 18k gold chains: salomon cord, barbada, venetian, forced, and bilbaína. Professional appraisal and guarantee at Oro Santander.
Second-hand gold chains: what to look for before buying
The gold chain is the foundation of the jewelry box: it can be worn alone, with a pendant, or combined. At Oro Santander, we select second-hand chains in 18k, 14k, and 9k with visible hallmark and appraisal. By buying second-hand, you save between 30% and 50% compared to a new chain of the same purity and weight.
Available models
Solomonic cord
Dense braided with the appearance of thick rope. Very durable, elegant, and with a strong presence. Common thicknesses 3-8 mm; lengths 45-70 cm.
Barbada
Flattened and twisted links. It is the classic unisex link chain, and the most common to wear with a pendant. Thicknesses 1-6 mm.
Venetian
Box-shaped links, very clean and geometric. Widely used with small pendants and in baby/communion pieces.
Forced
Oval links welded one by one. Good flexibility, ideal for combining with charms and medals.
Bilbaína and handmade braided chains
Regional models with cultural significance: gallery chains, northern bilbaínas, Galician filigrees. Each one inspected and guaranteed in the workshop.
How to choose thickness and length
- Fine daily chain: 1-2 mm thickness, 45-50 cm. Ideal with a small pendant.
- Dressing chain: 3-4 mm, 50-55 cm. Worn alone or with a medium pendant.
- Chain with presence: 5-8 mm, 55-70 cm. Thick solomonic cord or barbada. Worn alone.
- Men’s chain: 3-6 mm, 55-65 cm. Thickness and weight proportional to the user.
Verification
- Official hallmark (750, 585, 375) verified at least at two points on the link.
- Touch test with acid.
- Complete weight including clasp, registered to 0.01 g.
- Inspection of the clasp (snap or ring) and every 4-5 links to detect openings or breaks.

Caring for your chain
- Store it hanging or laid out — avoid knots and tangles.
- Clean it with warm water and neutral soap; for dense braids, use a soft brush.
- Take it off to sleep — continuous wear weakens links.
- Bring the chain every 18-24 months to check the clasp and welds.
Frequently asked questions
Can they be lengthened or shortened?
Yes. In the workshop, we shorten for free on pieces purchased from us; lengthening requires additional links of the same model (€10-40 depending on the chain).
Which chain holds a heavy pendant better?
Thick barbada (from 3 mm) or solomonic cord. The fine Venetian may struggle with pendants over 6 g.
Can I change the clasp for a larger one?
Yes — change to a solid gold snap of larger gauge for €15-40 depending on the chain. Free on pieces purchased from us in the first year.
